Battery Recycling Policies for 2025 – We no longer accept alkaline batteries

Businesses and organizations, looking to recycle batteries in Pittsburgh? Here are PGH Batteries’ battery recycling policies for 2025 – in pictures. The key thing to know is that rechargeable batteries generally must be recycled by battery recycling channels. Either by law or common sense. Heavy metals must be kept out of landfills and water supplies. Lithium-based batteries can be fire hazards. On the flipside, WE NO LONGER RECYCLE ALKALINE BATTERIES. Alkaline batteries are not particularly toxic, dangerous, or contain any materials of value for recycling.

We no longer recycle alkaline batteries

We no longer recycle alkaline batteries even from our customers. In consumer or otherwise moderate quantities, alkaline batteries are safe for the waste stream. They have no toxic heavy metals and do not pose a fire risk. Being light on metals they have little to recycle. They are safe to put in your trash regularly. Stop saving them by the bucket and let them go.

We recycle lead acid batteries for free!

We recycle all lead acid batteries for free! We expect the exchange of used batteries in setting our lead acid battery prices when we sell lead acid batteries. Know that if you are looking to recycle lead acid batteries in Pittsburgh, it is illegal in all of Pennsylvania to dispose of them in the trash. They must be recycled.

For lithium primary, lithium polymer, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) and damaged or swollen lithium-ion batteries, we charge $5 per pound

For lithium primary, lithium polymer, and damaged or swollen lithium-ion batteries, we charge $5 per pound. The most common lithium primary batteries are AED batteries. All these types of batteries must be treated as hazardous material for shipping and recycling purposes. The photo shows examples of swollen lithium-ion batteries. So if you are looking to recycle these batteries in Pittsburgh, know that they are fire hazards that can start fires in municipal waste centers or landfills, and thus must be recycled properly via battery recycling channels.

We do recycle most rechargeable batteries at no cost – Lithium Ion, NiCd, NiMh, lead acid

We do recycle most rechargeable batteries at no cost – Lithium Ion, NiCd, NiMh, lead acid.

Using clear tape, tape the terminals of all lithium batteries of any voltage, and nickel rechargeable batteries over 9V. One exception is that 9V alkaline batteries do not have to be taped (and we no longer accept alkaline batteries). We reserve the right to charge a $0.50 per unit taping fee if you don’t properly tape terminals. Trust us, it’s easiest for the terminals to be taped before the batteries go into the recycling bucket. Please help us.
